Things didn’t improve too much on the later versions of the PS2.  They would still suffer the dreaded disc read error.  Again, it was possible to repair this problem with just a few tools, but all too often, a new laser was needed.

Luckily, we always kept a good supply of the KHS-400R laser in stock.
