It’s quite a well known fact that the PS2 isn’t the most reliable piece of equipment, so here are some tips to help keep it working as long as possible.
Avoid keeping your PS2 on the floor, especially carpet. The dust gets into the PS2 clogging up moving parts and coming to rest on the laser optics, causing accelerated wear.
Avoid smoking near your PS2! YES! The PS2 lets lots of air inside to keep it cool, and some of this gets into the laser. Have you ever noticed that in a smokers home there are always yellow ceilings from where the smoke has stained it, causing the yellow build up? The same happens to the lens of the laser in a PS2, this yellow substance builds up on the lens, making it more difficult for the PS2 to read your disc, we have seen this lots of times from PS2′s that were sent in for repair. One option that may help is to use a DVD cleaning product every month to clean the laser.
Avoid the use of CD-R and DVD-R media. Recordable discs do not reflect the laser as well as pressed discs, making the laser unit work harder in order to keep the data coming at the required rate, this results in accelerated wear. If you have to use this media, ensure it is good quality.
Keep it clean! Keeping your console clean keeps dust out of the laser and also stops dust build-up disturbing airflow, which can lead to the PS2 overheating. Below we have some tips on keeping the dust from building up on your console, you just need a vacuum cleaner with brush attachment.

Also a CD or DVD drive cleaning disc will help to keep dust off the laser eye. Do not use too often though, just 4 times per year should be fine.
