If cleaning doesn’t seem to help your PS2 read discs any better, you can try
some simple adjustment techniques which will alter the laser’s distance and
azimuth to the disc.
First, follow the PS2 dissasembly instructions
to get to the picture below.
Remove the 4 screws holding the lid onto the PS2 laser housing.
Next remove the 2 screws that hold the laser tray in place (see
below), then slide the draw out.
With the draw removed you will be left with the following
Step 1. Using trial and error, adjust the white wheel (arrow
1) to change the laser distance / angle to disc. Normally, moving closer will
help (counter clockwise).
If this doesn’t help, try to adjust the black screw (arrow 2)
to move laser closer or farther from the disc, but do not tighten so much as
to jam the laser.
