If cleaning laser adjustment 101 hasn’t helped to fix your problem, it’s time
for some more advanced techniques.
First, follow the PS2 dissasembly instructions
to get to the picture below.
Remove the 4 screws holding the lid onto the PS2 laser housing.
Next remove the 2 screws that hold the laser tray in place (see
below), then slide the draw out.
With the draw removed you will be left with the following

Step 1. Remove slide rail retaining screw (red arrow)
Lift out the laser with the slide rail, remove the slide rail
from the laser and put in a safe place.

Now you have the laser eye removed. Holding as shown above,
remove the flat cable from the ZIF (Zero Insertion Force) socket by losening
the clip.
DO NOT TAKE THE CLIP OUT OF THE SOCKET, it just needs to come out
about 2mm, use gentle force, see below.

Once the laser is free of the cable you can adjust the pots
(potentiometers). Ideally, use a multimeter to measure the resistance, which
should not go below 600 ohms.
Normally they will both read about 1 K, make this slightly lower
to help the laser read the discs again.
Using your multi-meter, measure the
2 top terminals of each pot, make adjustments of about 50 ohms at a time

This will help if there is any life left in your laser, if your
console still will not read discs your next course of action may be to replace
your laser.
Follow instructions in reverse to re-assemble your PS2.

Hello.. If I’m not wrong, that’s a 400b laser. My question is, what does that screw in the center, my PS2 model is a 35001 and it has a 400b. The console has a little hole to get to that screw without taking out the lens. My PS2 is giving me a lot of trouble. Right now it’s not working, sometimes I’ve turned that screw and the sound of de lens change. I would like to know what is it for. And also I want to know how I can fix it so it stops scratching my DVDs. I can see when it starts that the lens comes out too high, and it scratches the center of the DVDs, because when I put a CD on it, it doesn’t even lights an read it perfectly. I hope anybody can help me please. Thanks
Replace the lens. If it has scratched dvd’s then the lens is probably scratched also.
