Is your PS3 broken? One common problem with the PS3 seems to be the dreaded Yellow Light of Death (or YLOD). Seems to be more common with the 60GB PS3 model, and normally caused by over heating and heat cycles.
Each time the PS3 warms up, components expand, then contract when they cool. This is a cycle. Running through many cycles can lead to weaknesses in solder joints, which eventually crack and cause an open circuit. The problem with the PS3 is that nearly all chips on the mainboard are BGA chips (ball grid array), so, it’s impossible to visually inspect for bad solder joints. They are all hidden under the chips!
Basically, the only way to fix this problem is to ‘reflow’ the board. This involves heating the whole board upto the specified solder melting point using hot air. All solder joints are remelted and any connection problems resolved.
However, this is one repair that we don’t recommend be attempted at home. Many guides recommend using a heat gun to reflow solder under some chips, but it is all too easy to overheat these chips and destroy them.
